Lyrik has recently received devastating news: in addition to left-sided heart failure, they have now been diagnosed with right-sided heart failure. Doctors have given a prognosis of only one year to live. Despite the overwhelming odds, Lyrik and their partner, Matthew, are determined to fight. Their plan is to use donations to fund a permanent move from Arizona to California, where a hospital has expressed willingness to evaluate Lyrik’s uniquely complex case—and potentially place them on a heart-lung transplant list.
If Lyrik is accepted onto the transplant list, the funds will go toward supporting basic living expenses for about a year: food, rent, transportation, and necessary medical fees. Should the hospital in California ultimately be unable to take them, any remaining donations will help Lyrik and Matthew seek out a different transplant clinic—no matter how far across the country they need to go. The support they’ve received so far has been nothing short of extraordinary, and thanks to it, Lyrik may finally have a chance at life. Updates on both the plan and Lyrik’s condition will be shared along the way.
Lyrik is 20, soon turning 21—a young adult with a love for painting, a talent for writing, and a vibrant personality that shines despite the challenges they face. They are autistic, love pit bulls and the color pink, and fondly remember the smell of tamales on Christmas mornings. More than anything, Lyrik wants to continue growing, learning, and living a full life. But their heart failure and weakened lungs stand in the way, and a heart transplant combined with a double lung transplant is the only way forward.
Lyrik’s medical journey began before they were even born. They arrived in the world with a cancerous tumor in their right kidney, which went undiagnosed until they were two years old. Stage 4 diffuse anaplastic Wilms tumor had already progressed rapidly. Against the odds, Lyrik survived—but not without consequences.
Over nearly two decades, much of Lyrik’s life has been spent in hospitals, under artificial lights and cold conditions, missing out on the warmth of the sun and the simple joys of childhood and adolescence. That stolen time is a reminder of how precious life is, and why Lyrik refuses to let their illness take everything. They want to live. They want to thrive.
No hospital in their home state will take them due to the complexity of their condition, their stature (4’8”), and their LVAD (left ventricular assist device). California represents the next best hope—a hospital willing to evaluate them, provided they can first relocate. But moving across states is expensive.
Lyrik’s goal is to raise $50,000, a sum intended to cover essential costs:
-
Purchasing a reliable vehicle
-
Gas for the journey
-
Moving trucks and labor
-
Medical supplies
-
Medications during insurance transitions
-
Food, hygiene, and cleaning supplies
-
Deposits and rent for a new apartment
This amount would only get them settled and allow Matthew to find a job to help support them alongside Lyrik’s disability payments. The transplant evaluation process may be lengthy, and if Lyrik is placed on the transplant list, the timeline to receive life-saving organs is uncertain.
Of course, donations are completely optional. But for those who can give, even a small contribution can help someone reach a chance at life. Every bit helps.
Lyrik’s story is one of resilience, courage, and an unyielding will to live. They are more than their illness—they are a person full of creativity, love, and dreams. And with the support of others, Lyrik has a real chance to continue experiencing the life they so deserve.
